it always bothers me too!! I always felt like the framing was very obvious. issue 50's debates ran so deep when it was never meant to be some philosophical issue. Sonic's not a dick, but surge blames her life being awful on him, and interprets his attitude as 'i'm better than you' and its SO obvious

in all fairness its quite common for people to have cute little animal mascots as their audience facing persona while also promptly writing off being a furry! granted its not like you're trying to hide it either.
