This sits on Monacan ancestral land in VA. Washington was born enslaved here in 1856, rose to lead Tuskegee, and became one of the most influential Black voices of time. Explore trails, tobacco fields, and reconstructed slave cabins.

It was a big weekend of driving over 1,000 miles to see 6 more Virginia State Parks with @girlswhohikevirginia 🗺️ 🥾🌳🌲⛰️

Our first stop was Claytor Lake State Park, where we had a nature and history tour from one of the sweetest park rangers ever.

I stayed with the race for a mile and then wandered the forest on the North Valley Trail. I met a cardinal, three dogs, and walked with a strange man for a while who told me if I come back in a month the forest will be magical with blooming laurels. Virginia friends, is this true?

Last week’s full moon hike with @girlswhohikevirginia on the W&OD Trail. It was too cloudy to see the moon, but the weather was right and the company was great.

The river was high on this rainy day and there were very few people out. The photo with the ice skates is a small memorial for the individuals who died on Flight 5342 on January 29.

3.6 miles along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Trail on another freezing cold day (Friday). It was so cold. It was also obviously beautiful. The path is paved, with the exceptions of the boardwalk bridges. I can’t imagine being there when it is less cold because it is probably packed with people.

This is a #railtotrail and the 45-mile Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail is the skinniest park in the state.

And like that, my first trip to Alaska is a wrap. It was nothing short of a dream for me. Thank you to Sam and thank you Alaska. I love you.

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, Anchorage, AK

The last day we biked the coastal trail. The trail is 11 miles each way. There are side quests to hike sandy little trails to the beach, and a field near the airport where there was a ton of people hanging out watching the planes fly very low above us.

Eklunta Lake, Chugach State Park, Anchorage, AK

This may have been my favorite place we visited. The state park has 25 miles for running, hiking, and biking. It felt wild and free and I loved it.

Spencer Glacier, Chugach National Forest, Anchorage, AK

I GOT TO RIDE ON A REAL TRAIN! Spencer Glacier is only accessible by taking an Alaska Railroad train. It was awesome. Spencer Glacier itself was beautiful, but as you can see, it was another day or snow, rain, and clouds!

Potter Marsh, Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge, AK

We were going to have an adventure to ride a train to see a glacier, but our incredible race directors planned a special side quest on the way. We stopped at Potter Marsh, an easily accessible system of boardwalks through a beautiful marsh.

Independence Mine State Historical Park, Palmer, AK

At the top of Hatcher Pass is an enormous gold mine from the 1800’s that was abandoned in 1951. The lodge is close to the mine, so we walked from there after warming up with a fire and comfort food.

•Hatcher Pass, near Palmer, AK

Hatcher Pass is a beautiful drive through the Talkeetna Mountains in Alaska. It has many trails, but the most popular ones are related to the pristine turquoise lake at the summit and Independence Mine (next post). We had epic awful weather, but it was still a 10/10!

Palmer - Moose Creek Rail Trail, Palmer, AK

12 miles, out-and-back
1,550’ elevation gain

This trail was near our Airbnb and most of us loved using it most mornings. Most of the old railroad system is tucked between two bluffs and crawling toward the riverside gave way to incredible views!
