Can it really be considered a coincidence that Rwanda and all the countries featured on cycling team jerseys—UEA, Bahrain, Astana/Kazakhstan, and Israel—are, without exception, extremely problematic when it comes to human rights? While many consider this sportswashing, it is rarely, if ever, questioned by cycling commentators. 🇳🇱 Bijvoorbeeld, Rwanda dat het komende wereldkampioenschap wielrennen organiseert terwijl het verantwoordelijk is voor de grotendeels verzwegen oorlog in Oost-Congo. Mag het nog toeval heten dat Rwanda en alle landen die op truien van wielerteams staan – UEA, Bahrain, Astana/Kazachstan en Israël – zonder uitzondering uiterst problematisch zijn als het op mensenrechten aankomt? Terwijl velen dit beschouwen als sportswashing, wordt dit zelden of nooit in vraag gesteld door wielercommentatoren.
