There was a Screaming Trees out of PEI, but they changed their name to “The Trees” when the US grunge band had a hit called “Nearly Lost You”. I had both albums on cassette in the 90s and had to explain several times that they were two diff bands.

Just a guess, but HAL may mean “Highest Astrological Level”? That level may be more predictable and consistent over time. Good mystery to solve!
