6. Knife (The Butcher Shop)

I always love drawing narrative driven pieces like this and imagining the world the character lives in 😄

The wooden shutters to the shop are swung open wide revealing a massive hunk of meat on top of a chopping board centred on the serving counter. The man is leaning over it with a keen expression. He has his knife stabbed into the board; he grips it firmly - as if he is ready to pull it out at any moment and slice the meat. Behind him, decorating the back wall of the shack are framed knifes of different shapes and sizes. There are also various jars containing specimens of rare monsters his customers have bought to him in the past. There is a board placed in front of the shop which reads ‘We can’t cut? You don’t pay’. As it suggests, the butcher shop will butcher anything: the weird, the dangerous, or just your chickens for dinner.

Captain Molluscove. A jovial female pirate with flowing orange hair tied up to resemble that of an octopus. She holds your gaze confidently – her stare gentle yet seemingly all-seeing. You two are amongst the trees in the dark forest; you can see the axe you left in the tree stump earlier that day and the basket of wood you’ve collected sat behind her. You recall that you entrusted her to keep watch whilst you rested your eyes for a short while. She’s been so kind to you even though you are but a stranger – it can be a lonely and a dangerous place in the forest but she always makes you feel safe and welcome. As you join her by the campfire, from the corner of your eye you catch sight of something thin and long, like a rope with a frayed end, flicking around behind her… however in the darkness of the night you can’t be sure what you’ve seen. Perhaps your eyes are playing tricks on you?

Late Bloom 🌸

Experimented with the default watercolour brushes in Fresco and ended up taking a Skill Share course on how to use them halfway through the piece because I had no idea what I was doing 🤣🤣

A middle aged East Asian man is on his knees in front of a large ceramic bowl holding a long wooden stick. Using his sturdy arms, he mixes the contents of the bowl with it. He is surrounded by an array of materials and tools used for making paper umbrellas. The tatami room he is in is flooded with light of the late evening sun. Did a fashion life drawing workshop today. I loved having a play with different media and combining them in unexpected ways. The PM session with inks was especially fun - it was so freeing to let the water and ink flow and do its own thing. (And I didn’t erase anything the entire day!!)

In my search of a leafy house plant that will survive my not-so-green-fingers and total lack of plant knowledge, I came across plenty of people who definitely knew what they were doing 🌱
