I will forever be proud of my then 9-year-old going toe-to-toe with a substitute teacher who tried to force him to stand for the pledge.
I’m always appalled to see how few Americans support the 1943 holding in Barnette, that schools can’t compel students to say the pledge, and how few Americans agree that it’s bad for the government to set orthodoxy in speech and thought.
