My first book is out! And you can download it for free for the next 4 weeks. It's on knowing what it is like to do something (what kind of knowledge is this, how do we acquire it, and when if ever can we share it with other people). #philsky #philosophy #epistemology doi.org/10.1017/9781...

Some striking heads and patterns from the NGV's wonderful Kimono exhibition. (Thanks to that weird game they play here for giving us a public holiday today.)

Right, search engines and algorithmic filters are great at directing you to what you wanted and things in the vicinity of what you have found before, but browsing can reveal things you needed but were way off your radar until they caught your eye.

So, I value browsing real physical book shelves a lot but I tend to seek that experience out mainly in book shops these days rather than my institution's library (partly bc a lot of books are stored offsite or only online these days). But I should go into the library more.
ywcath.bsky.social
Yes, exactly. And I think you can replicate some of that value through things like philpapers, but there's something about browsing real physical books shelves (maybe the slower pace of it) which can't be replicated well online.

On a whim I decided to go into my Uni's *physical* library just to browse the philosophy shelves with no plan, and to grab a few titles that caught my eye. It was like stepping back in time in a very good way.

Thank god (and Dave Chalmers and David Bourget) for philpapers!! Long may its funding model be sustainable.

Just deleted my account (after 15 years) after being horrified to hear of the new terms of service and of reports (from people I trust) of academia dot edu creating podcasts from people's works without consent and sending automatic emails to people in one's profession without consent. Outrageous!

Just deleted my academia.edu account after 17 (!) years -- the company's exploitative new terms of use are outrageous, and it's a shame such a blatant commercial sell-out is able to operate under the .edu top-level domain. If you are still on academia.edu, please consider deleting your account too.

It’s hard to convince non-cultists that a decision by a company on content was based purely on the free market & internal standards when the president began a campaign to suppress the content in July & the govt then repeatedly threatened to crush the company if they don’t comply.

Is there a ghost supervillain? That might be appropriate.
ywcath.bsky.social
The autotext generator for one of my video lectures changed "the mind supervenes on the brain" to "the mind supervillains on the brain".

tbf the latter is a much more interesting hypothesis.

Spare a thought (or better yet a quale) for all the people out there having non-lived experiences.

Vampires like to count grains of rice?

Something to think about for all those philosophers who dismiss the value of counting grains of sand/rice :)
