It's definitely not like the early 2000s anymore 😑 In the US you're pretty much limited to independent places or Barnes and Noble for brick and mortar.

Might just be what I read but 12-15$ US for a hardcover seems average for me. Much better than the 25$+ they used to sit at. I don't read many new releases though.

I always suggest people start with "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead" cause it's not only a good standalone it sets up a lot of stuff.

It was one dedicated criminal systemically ripping off the old welfare system. Clinton eliminated that entire benefit system.
There is an entire subculture of benefit-- aggrandizement but it isn't everyone. There are people with Housing Choice vouchers + SNAP + selling prescriptions though.

It's hard to defraud in the sense it's difficult to get if you don't qualify. In terms of trading benefits for drugs or cash it's pretty simple. The junkies around here just give their EBT cards to their dealer.
