With that estimator, we jump forward to 19th century London to look at the birth of the city's first professional police force, finding that within their jurisdiction the concentration of violence around markets declined over 50%... (5/N)

We introduce a simple model to serve as our conceptual framework, and show that in medieval London violence was disproportionately concentrated around the era's marketplaces. We then use a locally hosted LLM to unpack the accounts of these murders. (3/N)

We make the argument that the factors driving violence in illicit markets are not unique to the commodities being sold, rather that violence would exist in any market if the participants were similarly cut off from formal institutions of enforcement and dispute resolution. (2/N)

Great news, how can incarcerated folks be expected to set up the post-release housing and employment parole boards often require if they're required to pay (at minimum) $1 per 15 minutes? Each call being the equivalent of at least 2 hours of prison labor
