Most Post cuts are in hard news, which requires local presence, full teams, and many background expenses (e.g. legal). All tremendously expensive.

Analysts like me can start a Substack. But traditional reporters need institutions; if laid off, they're screwed.

The difference. however, is that Bezos wasn't forced to do this by the state. He had the resources to preserve the Post indefinitely, if he wanted. He *chose* capitulation.

one odd feature of the second trump administration is that even some transparent right-wing hacks (like whelan) care more about their credibility than the people currently in government, so it they come into conflict

when i met with him, he spent a long time trying to persuade me that people had totally misinterpreted orbán's speech about liberal democracy as a broadside against liberalism. i distinctly remember thinking "this guy is treating me like an idiot"
