You're wrong, but it is fine to be wrong about things.

Don't let it bother you.

Having never even heard of the series you are safe!

This exactly. Go Nagai is so wildly creative at all times that the idea of a setup-payoff structure doesn't make any kind of sense. He's not just throwing spaghetti at the wall, he's inventing spaghetti mid-flight.

It's fine to be wrong about things.

"Cohesive and thematically resonant whole" goes against everything Go Nagai is. His work is chaotic, unstructured, and flows purely from the ID. Putting cohesion on a Go Nagai work basically destroys everything that is unique to him as an artist.

Sure. Because you are imprinting your own sensibilities on someone else's work. But that is not the point of Go Nagai's work. He was not trying to tell nice stories that empowered people.

I know it goes without saying here, but I fucking love cities. As someone who grew up in a small town, cities absolutely RULE.

I was just at a lecture series, and we asked "What is a shaman?"

The answers made me think I should stop using that term...

Les Miserables is another example of parity. The book is a masterpiece. The musical is a masterpiece.

The film, however, is dogshit.
zackdavisson.com
I think there are several examples where there is parity; where the adaptation is as good as the original. Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep being the most classic example.

In general, I think the further an adaptation goes away from the original, the better chances of parity.
zackdavisson.com
It's possible. Just exceedingly rare. And generally requires the source material to be somewhat dogshit in the first place. But since Go Nagai's work is not dogshit, it cannot be surpassed. The best you can hope for is parity.

Go Nagai's works can never be improved. No more than Pablo Picasso's works can be improved. Or Vincent van Gogh.

These are artists, and those are the works they create. One cannot improve on them. Only be derivative.

For my birthday I got myself a bunch of the H.P. Lovecraft adaptations by Gou Tanabe. Such an amazing artists. I feel he really captures the feel of the Lovecraft world.

you ever think about those real weird overlaps. like tennessee williams might have listened to the ramones

I think I can agree with that.

It's looking at something truly unique and unfettered and asking the question "But what if this were bland and just like everything else?"

Devilman: Crybaby is garbage compared to the Devilman manga. Sorry, with that said, all your future recommendations are null and void.

I mean, yeah. Thats exactly my point.

It is more like 100% for me. I can't think of any where I liked the anime better.

Everyone keeps telling me I should watch this, and it is on Netflix, and short... so giving it a shot.
