At least when they were saying that kind of thing in the 80s, a lot of companies still had to worry about pleasing customers and making good products instead of being condensed into monopolies that are too big to fail or actually make good stuff. It's even more ludicrous now.

Similar to print until the Internet. Remember people saying, "I read that", meaning it was vetted by editors and publishers? The printed word carried some weight compared to how now any rando can easily crap out a few words and have them read by strangers.

I have also wondered whether the medium carries some residual gravitas from the mid century, when making something available via video or film was a significant investment that automatically lent some kind of legitimacy (that plus maybe fairness in advertising doctrine?)
