When I had vertical space I would slot in something that could go vertical. In some places I just kind of went off the reservation to get things to fit (see 8 Bit Box).

I sorted by box size and shape then started filling the shelf. When I got close to the top of a cube I would experiment until I found a game that perfectly fit the final spot. Heavy (by actual weight) went on the bottom of a given stack.

They're just stacked on top of each other, no spacers.

The shifting of pieces is why I don't do vertical with everything. Too many games with loose components in the insert that would just dump out. Besides, horizontal never causes me any problems and everything is just as easily accessible.
