It's a fascinating passage about different kinds of knowledge of the world (street smarts and book smarts) and how children share them with one another, expanding one another's horizons and also destroying one another's innocence.

You're right - the Yiddish Shabesdik more broadly means festive or sacred - I wonder if Sunday has historically had this broader meaning in English?
