I should probably just shut up and try to wrap my head around creating great content on TikTok if I want to stay relevant. I don't know if I even want to stay relevant.

To me, the social internet broke when the timeline became ruled by algorithms and we started seeing influencers and companies slowly but surely invading it. First on Facebook, then on the rest of the social networks.

Before, I was following interesting people. Mostly writers or people with witty tweets.

The Mexican Tweetosphere was quite small and everyone knew each other.

We even had Tweeter meetups in my hometown and also in Guadalajara.

—Oh, then you came here to earn more money?
—After taxes, I earn pretty much the same.

—Do you have actual universities in Mexico?
—No, we usually just gather under a cactus and discuss science.

—Your PhD is from a German university, right?
—Noup, there are PhD programs in Mexico.

They usually just stop when they have to spell out a racist remark.

Sadly, interactions like this have become a lot more common since I arrived. And the good thing is that I can speak enough German to get me by. But I can always play dumb when they start going with these subjects.
