oh there is a R&D alright. It's precisely because no one ever thinks of the computer clusters, automation and IP/profile/etc creation in bulk that these operations require that the bourne take looks like it might make sense

the higher the potential profit on onward resale, the higher the incentive for investment in information/tech advantage at the point of initial purchase

the OP thesis also relies heavily on the initial purchase round being a fair market, which, as anyone who has ever tried to get one of those heavily gated high prized items knows, is very much not the case

this is the part that is rarely argued in plain words and it sucks because it makes the "but YOU have nothing to fear from this" escape easier for those people: if I am liable to a different punishment than you, it doesn't matter if I will ever do crime, I still have lower baseline rights than you
