In May 2023, the Home Affairs Minister acknowledged to Parliament that a backlog of over 250,000 applications for late registration of birth had accumulated (2018-2022). This huge figure is not our estimate. As part of our court case, we've asked Home Affairs to provide updated data for 2023 onward.
Hundreds of thousands of children like Nomahlubi are being denied their basic rights because of Home Affairs’ delays. We’re in court demanding urgent action and accountability. No child should be invisible. With support from the @childrensinstitute.bsky.social and Legal Aid
