I snipped some holly outside for decorating after seeing holly for sale at the farmers' market this weekend and now wonder why I've never done this.

My friends and I will be giving away cloth produce bags at the Sunnyvale Farmers' Market this Saturday, 10am. We make these out of donated fabric that might otherwise end up in the trash. The bags can also double as gift bags. (Thank you Debbie for the super cute fabric!)

In this week's newsletter: 6 makeovers for leftover cooked rice. Five are edible recipes, one is glue for making plastic-free paper tape to wrap gifts. (You could eat the glue but probably wouldn't want to.)

This small milkweed bug asked me to please not cut back the sad looking, dead milkweed because it wants to chow down on the seeds and perhaps small dead insects it finds so I said okay.

This holey towel is now a smaller intact towel and a few washcloths. I finished the edges on a serger but a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine would also work. #repair

To pit compost, dig down 1', add 4" to 6" of food scraps, top with brown matter, fill with soil and forget it. No harvesting necessary! By the time this artichoke takes over the bed like its neighbor, the scraps will have disappeared.

Thirteen brands of pasta would be affected. On the upside, homemade pasta, while much more work, tastes incredible.

Annual Hachiya persimmon PSA!

Enjoy these persimmons AFTER they soften—so soft, you may think they're bad. Firm Hachiya persimmons are horribly astringent. You'll never forget the day you bite into an unripe one. But after they ripen, they taste like candy. (Eat squat Fuyus any time.)

I transplanted an artichoke mama to the backyard. This trunk-like stalk has 10 babies attached to it (you can't see them all here). Artichokes are perennial vegetables—at least in my zone, 9b.

Raising Hare ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
During lockdown in the English countryside, the author comes across an abandoned newborn hare. After initially hesitating, she brings the leveret home. She does not name it or treat it as a pet and rarely handles to honor its wild nature. The memoir chronicles their relationship.
