Hell, the Sphere Grid and AP system being effort/inventory driven rather than a flat EXP system makes grinding more tedious funnily enough.

FFX was like one of the first RPGs I played that broke this mentality in me, bc 99% of encounters in that game were puzzles with bespoke solutions rather than flat stat checks.
From X character beats Y enemy type, to bosses having mechanics you actually have to engage with to beat.

Either that, or they are running away from/skipping too many encounters and are in fact, *underleveled* as a result.

Also alternatively, exec types not understanding the organic element when it comes to the success of creative/entertainment work, and trying waaay to hard game the system.

Alternatively, old heads being unable to accept that at 30+ years old you are no longer the sole target demographic for things made for <10 y/os.

I get the vibe that all this pandering to nostalgia and old heads is consequence of us on both production and consumption level of things taking too long to make for younger peope to get into and grow up with.

You don't need to say, drag a 90 year old person out of retirement to go play a character they played like twenty years ago.
