On the last night of Chanukah, my family and I started a new tradition. We ate pizzas, drank wine, and read together the Book of Judith. The Book of Judith has long been an important part of Chanukah even though it happened some 400 years before the Maccabees. And yet, we never read it before. 1/6

Today we had our roof reshingled, we joined old friends on a Zoom call, and we had leftovers for dinner. Sometimes the best holiday celebration is just to live life. Happy 7th night of Chanukah, people.

I dedicate tonight's candle lighting to Queen Salome Alexandra (aka Shlomtzion) the only female ruler of Judea. Her 9-year reign has been described as a golden age of Hasmonean history, a time of peace and prosperity. Maybe we should have more women in charge? Happy Chanukah!

This is the absolute best example of how we can be civil across the political divide. Also, mazel tov to Nick Roberts for appearing (positively) in Time magazine.

Meet the Identical Twins on Opposite Sides of the Political Divide
One is a Democratic city councillor, the other is an anti-immigration activist. Things got confusing when they appeared at the same public debate.

Brighter and brighter! Tonight I made Sefardic bimuelos de kalavasa (fried pumpkin donuts) for Chanukah. Granted, mine turned out like mini pancakes, but all in all they worked really well with a drizzle of honey. Happy 5th night! www.myjewishlearning.com/the-nosher/s...

Halfway there. Tomorrow I shall make some new and exciting holiday dish from a long forgotten part of the diaspora. Tonight I finish up leftover kugel and latkes. Happy 4th night of Chanukah!

My son says there are 3 kinds of Jews: those that put applesauce on latkes, those that put sour cream on latkes, and those that are wrong. I heartily disagree. Turns out, homemade cranberry sauce goes great on latkes. Happy 3rd night of Chanukah, my friends!

Thomas Friedman just wrote what may be the most important op ed of the year. He defines the Polycene Era, a period of unprecedented interconnected complexity of computing, politics, economics, climate, and war. In our polarized times, our leaders MUST govern differently.

Yesterday, a coworker who had been out of the office on bereavement leave, responded to some emails I had sent to my team, asking for information on project X. Her text began, "Hello Zev! Read your emails. Working on it now." (1/3)

Just so it's on the record, if you ever come to me complaining about your state of poverty, and my response is to show you 24 pictures of my golden toilet, you have permission to storm my castle. With pitchforks.

Just a reminder, a massacre and genocide has been unfolding in Sudan and the world is silent. We need to hold UAE accountable.

David Brooks wrote one of the most important commentaries on how to create a mass movement to fight Trumpism. It's long, but it's DEFINITELY worth the read. All we need now is politically savvy leaders to create a Progressive Populist movement.
America Needs a Mass Movement—Now
Without one, America may sink into autocracy for decades.

The plight of the Druse in Syria is a true genocide. Syrian government troops are supporting Sunni rebels in carrying out a truly horrendous massacre. THIS is what we need to be talking about nonstop.

Fascinating editorial from NYT explains how Dems need to move to the center to win elections instead of trying to rally their base on the margins. They use actual data to back up their assertion, "A diverse, pluralistic nation depends on mutual understanding and regular compromise."

This breaks my heart and makes me furious, partly because I loved this restaurant, but mostly because a message is being sent that anyone Jewish and/or Israeli has no place in this country.

I'm glad that Govs. Pritzker and Newsom are meeting the attentional moment. The most chilling line from this article is, "Miller plainly believes there’s a latent majority out in the country that can be sleepwalked into authoritarianism."
Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.
