SHOUT OUT MOFS FOR WINNING THE NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY!!! MOFs have been my side hustle (lol) throughout my undergrad and I’m so happy to see them getting recognition. Huge day for MOF enthusiasts

When you see a headline that makes a claim that sounds absolutely bananas & cites some “study”, don’t just believe it because the headline used one science word. Look at the source. Was it even peer reviewed? Where? What are experts in the field saying about it? If it sounds ridiculous it might be.

Also just a reminder for ppl who follow me here from Twitter, I post my science-adjacent things here and save all my sports themed shenanigans for my Twitter! (I’m @zoey_wav there!!)

"The greatest danger to our future is apathy. ... What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." - Vale Jane Goodall (1934-2025).

Saw her with my mom right after I gave my first ever research talk at a conference outside my own university! Needless to say I was absolutely starstruck (from the nosebleeds of Place des Arts lol). Such a trailblazer for women in biology!!

Now seems like an appropriate time to say that the Jane Goodall talk I went to three years ago was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to. What an absolute icon

Polymorphism: my latest Birdword comic for Cornell Lab.
www.allaboutbirds.org/news/birdwor...
A three panel comic. In panel 1, there's a torn piece of paper with a definition: Polymorphism: noun. When one species contains two or more types of individuals (morphs) that differ by color or other physical characteristics unrelated to sex, age, locality, or season. In panel 2, there are red-tailed hawk morphs (calurus subspecies): light, dark, and intermediate. Note: these fall on a spectrum. In panel 3, there are red-tailed hawk morphs that I wish existed: blue-footed, red-winged, pileated (with a woodpecker head), bioluminescent, pocket-sized, vulturine (with a bare head) and resplendent (with green quetzal feathers and a very long tail).

I did a project on these little guys in grade 6 and have been obsessed with them ever since! So glad that conservation efforts are going well!

In case you hadn’t heard: Conservation works! 📣

Meet the ‘takhi’ (Przewalksi’s horse), the last truly wild horses. The last individuals in the wild were seen in the Gobi desert in 1969. Only a coordinated captive breeding programme (from just 12 indivs) saved them from extinction.
Przewalksi’s horse (or takhi) in the snow in Hustai National Park, Mongolia. The horse is standing facing the camera but the head is turned to the right. The warm brown tones of the horse contrast with the white snowy scene. Three Przewalksi’s horses walk together in a loose group. The horses are walking to the right of scene. Two have whitish bellies and brown backs, whilst the third larger individual is brown all over. All around is a snowy scene, only with golden grass tussocks poking out of the snow. A Przewalksi’s horse (or takhi) in the snow in Hustai National Park, Mongolia. The image is a profile of the side of the horse, with only the front half visible. The warm brown tones of the horse contrast with the white snowy scene. The horse has a white muzzle and black feet and lower legs. Two Przewalksi’s horses (or takhi) in the snow in Hustai National Park, Mongolia. One horse is dark brown and has its head up, whilst the other is sniffing and scraping among the snow for food. All around is a white snowy scene.

In recent Zoey lore, I’ve decided that 22 is the PERFECT age to learn to play hockey. Highly recommend starting a new sport and being absolutely abysmal at it. Most fun I’ve had in months!

Highlight of 2024 was seeing my first black crowned night heron in Montreal of all places and shrieking like I saw a celebrity ✨

We humbly interrupt your scroll to bring you the news that Wisdom—the world's oldest known wild bird—is breeding again, age 74.

Go on girl. 😍
A screenshot of a social media post from USFWSPacific that reads:

"SHE DID IT AGAIN!

Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg.

At an approximate age of 74, the queen of seabirds returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge last week and began interacting with a male."

This tweet is paired with an image of two Laysan Albatrosses at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, is shown alongside her new partner, demonstrating her enduring legacy as a remarkable seabird.
