Back to fandom, I guess

Current obsession: Gnosia (Setsu my beloved)

they/them
It's more that talking to my friend as we watched it made it easier to engage with the anime on its own terms, independent of the game

From that angle, I think Setsu's characterization basically works, even if the result is a very different character from who they are in the game

And yeah, I'm also frustrated at the anime only giving half an episode each for their two big events, especially when it spent IMO excessive time on other things, e.g. episodes 14 & 15

I totally get that. Setsu's relationship with the player was THE thing that made me fall in love with Gnosia, and I don't think anime-only viewers are going to feel as invested in Setsu (and their relationship with Yuri) as people who play the game

Are there things I would have liked to see done differently? Sure.

(If nothing else, I was really hoping that they'd animate Yuri holding Setsu after giving them the key.)

But eh. I can live the version we got.

anime!Setsu emphasizes their sense of justice, even when it means making it harder for them to break out of the loop

game!Setsu emphasizes their time loop fatigue and how that slowly erodes their ability to care about the rest of the crew

anime!Setsu vs game!Setsu are different in ways that change the shape of their relationship with Yuri vs the protagonist, but both versions are compelling and serve their function within the greater story -- including making the audience invested enough to want to save them
