In the early 1900s African Elephant populations were estimated to be in the millions, while there were around 100,000 Asian Elephants. Today there are around 400,000 African Elephants in the wild, and around 25,000 Asian Elephants.

dolphins use echolocation to see the world around them.
A dolphin's "clicks" travel long distances and bounce off of objects, allowing them to calculate the distance, shape, density, movement, and texture of an object.

Elephants possesses a phenomenal sense of smell. Their upper nasal cavities have chemical and olfactory sensors in the form of millions of receptor cells. An elephant’s trunk is more capable than a bloodhound's nose and is said to be able to smell water from several miles away.

The Emperor Penguin is a penguin that lives in Antarctica. It is the tallest and heaviest of all penguin species. Emperors live in the coldest climate on earth. They can stay warm because they have a thick layer of blubber that keeps the body heat in and cold air and water out.

Orcas are very social creatures and live in family groups called pods, which have up to 50 members. These pods are made up of related mothers and their descendants, known as matrilines.

Came across this "pink" grasshopper while hiking! It's the result of a rare genetic mutation -- supposedly there's a 1% chance of seeing them in a lifetime. There were thousands of (normal) grasshoppers hopping around, so I guess that helped our chances.

Elephants support the lives of other animals and keep their environment functioning, playing a critical role in maintaining habitat. Without elephants, ecosystems would crumble. They are engineers of biodiversity. If you love elephants (they are one of my favourite animals), repost this.

Galápagos penguins are the only penguin species to live on the equator. They live on the Galapagos Islands and are found mostly on the west side of the Archipelago, in islands like Fernandina, Isabela or Bartolome Islands. They live in little families.

Seahorses are one of the few species where the male, rather than the female, carries the unborn young. The male has a pouch on his belly where the female lays her eggs. The male fertilizes the eggs internally and carries them. The male cares for their young after the eggs hatch.

Since dogs have a harder time adjusting to heat than humans, being left in a warm car can quickly become life threatening. Dogs left alone in a car can quickly become dehydrated, develop heatstroke, or even die. Never leave them in a car for long and never leave them in a warm car. Keep them cool.

Dogs’ normal body temperature is slightly higher than that of humans (it hovers at around 101.5 degrees F), which means that hotter temperatures can affect them more. This is why you need to take care while walking your dog on a hot day.

Children who have lived with pets when they were infants are less likely to develop allergies and other diseases later in their childhood. These kids have a better immune system from being exposed to dogs.

Brown bear cubs are born the size of a tiny chipmunk. Cubs are born between January and March and are usually delivered in twos. They are born blind and without fur. The mother bear weans the cubs at about five months old. Cubs remains with their mother for two or three years.
