p.s.

Steam Input being a frontend for SDL is a gross oversimplification

I agree with you, for the most part.
But, adding support on all levels (SDL&kernel) takes time, so we decided to start working on our userspace utility which fills in the gap (for now).
We're aiming for functionality. I'll prolly join SDL and kernel efforts later once we polish our implementation.

Small tidbit:
If Steam Input were (F)OSS, Id have just contrib'd support for the Sw2 controllers (Pro, GC, N64) there

Everyone uses Steam, adding controller support there it feels like the best way to provide solid hrdw support. Steam (Input) is already so well established

I'd be willing to make a write-up of things we found, what's your proffered way of comms?

Hi! Genuinely didn't expect to see you here!

About driver and BT, we decided to make it a userspace driver. This makes the installation of our implementation simpler and cross platform (Python prototype uses Bleak, Rust btleplug)

As for SDL, we were made aware of SDL3 work being done for Sw2 controllers over on /r/gamecube (someone tagged @endrift.bsky.social in our post, which lead us to related commits).

We're open to working with SDL devs, feel free to make them aware of our efforts!

dev here, I'm developing it on Linux, the demo video is just Spzi running it on Win

One of our (later) goals is a Decky plugin for the S. Deck. That way, players will be able use the controllers there too, with controls + settings integrated right into the Steam UI (no desktop mode shenanigans)

we're actually doing it... the modpack I was making is going to be an original video game, we are keeping the beta inspirations especially for visuals, but it's going to be fully original in practice!

I wish I could share more, people deserve more high quality blocky sandbox games

every time I work on a minecraft mod, I want to change the game in such a fundamental level that I might as well make my own minecraft clone and sell it because of how far it strays away from actual minecraft

unfortunately I am not smart enough to optimize a sandbox game
