Israel approves designation of West Bank zones as state property

The Israeli government approved this Sunday a proposal to register broad areas of the West Bank as 'state property', for the first time since the occupation began in 1967, according to the Israeli public broadcaster KAN. Palestinian authorities criticize that the decision amounts to a de facto annexation of much of this territory. The initiative was presented by Finance Minister and ultranationalist Bezalel Smotrich, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and Defense Minister Israel Katz. They say the aim is to regulate agricultural exploitation and clarify the status of the occupied areas in the West Bank, a bureaucratic process whose complexity led Israel to abandon it decades ago. According to the Israeli channel, the decision was taken in retaliation to the 'illegal settlement procedures' that the Palestinian Authority is promoting in Area C of the West Bank, under exclusive administrative and security control of Israel.
