Bit of a stretch, but I'm going with ✨vibes✨

Constance Blake seeks out a local place to help her new daughter born without a charagma.

From #Charagma, my SFF dystopia about a world where all people are marked saved or damned from birth.
“If I weren’t a law-abiding woman,” the midwife had said, after seeing Constance’s inconsolable horror at her child’s missing charagma, “I might be inclined to say I’d heard a rumor.” “A rumor?” Constance had asked, too distraught to catch the meaning of the woman’s tone, at first. “Only a rumor,” the midwife went on. “Of a place in St. Epiphany’s District known for changing fates, so to speak. But of course I’d never advise anyone to chase that rumor. We all know the law of El, don’t we, Mrs. Blake? We all know what’s to be done with a child like that.” Insane of her, to even make the insinuation—even with plausible deniability—knowing that the twins’ own father was currently away prosecuting forgers and secret Reprobates. Insane of Constance, too, to respond not by reporting the woman to the authorities, but instead by asking another question: “Where might a not law-abiding woman find this place?” St. Epiphany’s District. Five blocks east of the trolley station. An unassuming clockmaker’s shop across from a run-down chapel. Ask for a clock with an extra hour. The old woman behind the counter of the shop was busy polishing a crystal clock face when Constance uttered this question in a low, urgent burst. Constance had half-expected to get no response except confused laughter from the woman, or at the very least an odd look. But the woman’s expression remained still, and only a slight hesitation in her polishing gave away that the phrase meant something to her. “I’m afraid those clocks are only for our very needy customers,” she said after a moment. “We wouldn’t want to give them away to just anyone.”

The grief hit me like a punch in the stomach. It must have hit Kazuo hard too, because I heard him suck in a breath and hold it. He turned away from me, pretending to look at the pictures on the wall, though I knew he was just trying to hide how much it affected him. “So, where’s the damn letter?” he asked, putting on a detached tone, though he couldn’t suppress the quiver in his voice. “It better be here after all we went through.” “I’m not sure,” I admitted. “He didn’t tell me.” “Oh, great.”

I tug out the folded photograph I use as a bookmark and open it. A picture of me, my mom, and my father, taken himself with the camera turned around. An analog selfie. My mom and baby-me are blurry around the edges, as if underwater, shoved up against the fuzzy white line of the crease bisecting the photograph. My father’s face looms large in the lower left foreground, his young face rendered with exceptional clarity, tauntingly oversized. The irony of it never sat well with me. The more accurate visual metaphor for his presence in my life would probably be the smash of his arm in the corner, a pixelated wash of taupe marring the border. I know only four facts about my father: (1) Insu Shin was from a well-to-do family in Korea but left home as a teenager. (2) He and my mom met in their twenties, then immigrated to New Jersey when she was pregnant with me. (3) His mental health sharply declined, and he left us before I turned one, ranting that he had to return home. (4) He loved poetry. And maybe now I could add: (5) He died in Alaska trying to find his way back to Kardia. Maybe.

Writing snippet: She plucked a dusty picture off the wall, rubbed the glass with the bottom of her sleeve, revealing a smiling family of four. A dark-haired man with his arm around a lighter-haired woman—her neck rolled back, caught mid-laugh—two children in bathing suits, a sand castle between them. “Shrimp!” she called. “Come here, come take a look at this.” He meandered over and she pointed, her finger hitting the glass, leaving behind a smudge of dirt. “See that? In the background there? All that blue.” She grinned, almost as wide as the woman in the picture. “That's the ocean.” Her chest swelled as she breathed it in, imagining the sweet, sea-salt air. “That's where we're going.”

I paused and put my phone down, closing my eyes to calm down. There was a reason that the electricity came on, there was a reason that there was an access point. Shit, there had to be a reason that the shit was unlocked in the first place. If I kept calm, if I just went back and checked the places I had not looked, I would find something. ‘blah-ding,’ my phone cried. I nearly jumped from my skin when the notification chime came through. It didn’t seem possible, but as I pulled down the system tab, there was no doubt about it; ‘new message request’. It was an alert from GenNow. I didn’t hesitate, I didn’t ask questions, I accepted the message request to get to the bottom of this. G0ald_ieL0x: (You accepted, hit 1 if you’re not a bot) DuggyTron3030: (What? You n my dms? Prov you not a bot) G0ald_ieL0x: (Good nuff – I don’t have a lot of time) (This network won’t be active for long, just know I amz a scientist and a friend. I have info, the outbreak – it is man made. Add me) There were countless thoughts running through my mind. Why in the hell was this person reaching out to me? If they were really a scientist there had to be at least a hundred different people, they could have contacted. I couldn’t imagine what was going through this person's mind. This was the part of the movie where I would hit accept, find out some shit I wasn’t ever supposed to know and then wind up the sacrifice for some white savior. The good news? I was alone and there weren’t any particular living white people around for me to make such a mistake. The bad news, however, was that I was a big dumb idiot that accepted anyway. “Girl, just pull the bottom of your top down a little.  It’ll cover the top of your skirt and no one will notice it isn’t zipped up all the way.  And you are positively glowing anyway! You look fabulous!”   Of course, this was coming from the man who went out and bought a blue and yellow tie to match the outfit I told him I’d picked out last week.  If I went with one of the backup choices, we wouldn’t match.  And I couldn’t do that to the man who thought I looked fabulous even though I couldn’t fit in my clothes.  I did, however, toss the heels and opt for flip-flops instead.  Inappropriate for a church wedding?  Perhaps.  But, let’s look at the bigger picture: I was going to a catholic wedding as the bearded date to a homosexual man while pregnant with another man’s baby out of wedlock.  I think my choice in footwear was the least of my sins that day.

But I don’t have a clue. Never have.” “Nobody knows!” Mr. Connolly declares. “Nobody ever knows.” I give him an incredulous look before tossing Dublin’s ball again. Mr. Connolly sighs. “Listen, missy—no one knows how to do life right. You just go, and try, and screw up. That’s the good stuff.” Scoot reemerges to sniff around, and Mr. Connolly strokes his tiny head. “Remember that maze I had for Scoot? All the odd things that tripped him up, but he made it through? It’s like that. We’re all just feelin’ our way through.” “We’re all just”—I pause and smirk at the image—“little hamsters?” “Mm-hm. But there’s no cheese at the end. The maze is the cheese. Squeak squeak.” I laugh. “Squeak squeak.”

We passed the night dry, in a room overlooking a cow pasture. By morning, the pasture had become a marsh and the cows were clustered together on the higher plateaus, lowing miserably, their ankles caked with mud. The rain kept falling into the afternoon and through the second night. We killed the sluggish hours playing dice in the tavern and spinning fictions about the locals.

For a moment he just stared at her, thoughts flickering behind his eyes, and finally gave her a shrug and a smile of surrender. “Alright, you’ve called me out, Mem,” he admitted. “I guess I need to think more carefully about my words. I only meant that—the little flaws, the little pieces of yourself that everyone worries about, those things don’t make you broken. And you shouldn’t—I hope you’ll try to be kinder to yourself. But yes, I suppose, there are people who are broken in certain ways. Including me. Sometimes life gives you injuries you never really recover from.” “El, that’s true,” Mem sighed. “And also,” he added, “I think there are some people in this world—many people—who are... rotten, on the inside. Whatever part of the soul makes us human, somehow they don’t have it. Maybe they were born without it. Maybe they had it once, but they strangled it dead so it wouldn’t bother them anymore. Could you call those kinds of people broken? Maybe. Though to me, I think of them more like garbage—waste. A broken thing doesn’t pollute the space it lives in, but garbage does, and it’s the same with those people. The world would be healthier without them.”

She was about to ask him what his plans were, when she saw land ahead through the mist and fog. “Are we docking already?” she asked. “I thought the voyage would take longer?” “We’re not going north. Not by sea anyway. That’s the west side of the strait ahead.” “Oh,” she said. “I thought that—” “Captain says the northern passage is too dangerous,” he interrupted. “That mess in Seba’s screwed up all the shipping around here, so he’s only taking us across. How do you think I got it so cheap?” She nodded, accepting what he told her with no way of knowing how to question it. Looking at the Tosser’s condition, she supposed a voyage north wasn’t feasible anyway. The ship was a rickety bucket with only two sails and seemed to be held together by its Captain’s willpower and little else. A longer journey in relative comfort was probably preferable to a shorter one on the leaking tub.
