[ID: Calculating I’m so tired of calculating. Whether I can walk across a room or to the doorway to smell fresh air for the first time in days, to feel summer on my face. Whether I can listen to five minutes of an audiobook without drowning in malaise. I’m so tired of calculating every thought. Should I even be writing a poem right now? Shouldn’t I be resting in silent darkness? I spend most of my ever-drained battery on medical appointments, fighting insurance companies, trialing new drugs and riding waves of side effects. I’m so tired of calculating just to ration for small, fleeting moments, moments that sometimes resemble joy. Like the butterfly dancing with wind out my window, or the finch singing unseen in a nearby tree. I’m so tired of calculating. I miss the luxury of living.]

Describing chronic illness as chronic pain suffers we tend to hide the pain so well that others can't go by the way we look on the outside. It's us learning how to function each day with a 10/10 pain score. Chronic pain means we can function with the level of pain that others would find out absolutely crippling. Most of the time we only have several hours that we can use to do daily tasks and the rest of the day is spent in bed trying to find the comfortable position to lay while sobbing clutching out a water bottle. And we do it all over again next day.

When you realize... The waiting room time is longer than the actual appointment. The insurance company has more control of your treatment then your doctor does. The only time you feel normal is when you're around other sick people. Your medication side effects are competing with your actual symptoms. You need a nap after taking a shower. Your "good days" still include pain and fatigue. Finding a doctor who actually listens is harder than winning the lottery.
