Speed restrictions protect us all
“If you get hit by a car travelling at 50km/h, you’ve only got a 1.5-in-10 chance of surviving. If it’s going 30km/h you’ve got a nine-in-10 chance.”

“But it was not enough to put up a sign that says 30km/h…there also needed to be design changes to slow down traffic.”

Speed is always a factor.
Switching 50km/h speed limits to 30km/h would protect cyclists while barely affecting commutes, research finds
One expert says a cyclist hit by a car travelling 50km/h has about a one-in-10 chance of surviving, while at 30km/h it is a nine-in-10 chance

About time

It’s 20 mph for a reason

We welcome this crackdown because #SpeedKills

We hope Kingston Council cllrs will not be derailed by colleagues want to reverse this #RoadSafety measure

Kingston Council is stepping up monitoring of its borough-wide 20mph speed limit, installing speed indicator devices on 18 local roads. This comes after a survey revealed that only 22.5% of monitored roads met the 20mph target. Full list of those 18 new roads is in Love Kingston.

There is a petition going around locally about allowing a residential road to become a rat run again for lorries

And to get rid of a safe speed limit

We think this petition is wrong. It benefits only drivers, not small businesses nor residents

#SaferStreets are for all of us

Another observation: on Gustine, a neighborhood street, there’s a 25 mph speed limit. Residents were concerned enough to add a speed hump but no one thought to lower the speed limit. #20isplenty

Opponents of 20mph speed limits say it’s “unenforceable”. So is any speed limit, but they make drivers more considerate.
#Cyclists and #pedestrians adopt #ActiveTravel but we get injured by motorists more times than we can count. When a life is lost, it’s irrecoverable.

When a local woman was killed cycling to work in the Sussex village where my family has lived for 50 years, I got involved in local politics to improve road safety.

Dear Britain, it’s now clear: 20mph zones save lives and don’t slow traffic. Implement them | Sadiq Khan
There is too much bluff and bluster on this subject. Ordinary people just want safe streets for themselves and those they love, and we can achieve that, says London mayor Sadiq Khan

How is it too slow? Drivers need to adhere to the legal limits and have more patience. And I'm a driver, before you ask. 👍

#20isPlenty as more West Sussex villages have reduced speed limits, even on A roads.
A reminder that Oxfordshire has also very successfully rolled out 20mph in a rural county with exceptionally limited political pushback. I really don't think this is talked about enough. Are your Cllrs refusing 20mph cos "Our LA isn't London"? Tell them about Oxfordshire! Happy to share policy docs.
Study on London 20 mph limits shows:
- collisions ⬇️ 35%
- casualties ⬇️ 36%
- fatal/serious injuries ⬇️ 34%
- child casualties ⬇️ 46%
- child deaths ⬇️ 75%
- walkers, cyclists, motorcyclists killed/seriously injured ⬇️ 28%

The genesis of the Arleta Triangle was desire for traffic calming in that area. Reduced speeds along Woodstock from 205 to 52nd would help alot IMO. #20isPlenty

We know how to save lives and make our city safer for everyone, especially children, older and disabled people, to walk, cycle and catch the bus.

Rolling out 20mph speed limits everywhere people are using pavements and need to cross the road makes sense.
New research provides conclusive proof that 20mph in London is saving lives.

14 yrs of analysis at 150+ sites - reviewed by experts - shows:

❤️40% fewer deaths (vs 7% drop on roads where no changes were made)
❤️75% fewer children killed & 50% fewer kids hurt

And slower speeds deliver so much more:

We need a 20mph limit in ALL residential areas. Wales has led the way and provided convincing evidence on serious accident reductions with this policy. #20isPlenty
Provisional estimates for road casualties in GB in 2024 released today.

1,633 fatalities (over 30 people a week)

29,537 killed or seriously injured (around 80 people a day)

Couldn't be clearer that a new approach to road danger reduction is needed in the UK's promised road safety strategy.

Enjoyed meeting with our local police this morning on Ashley Down Road and Ralph Road, with the speed monitor. Both these roads have terrible issues with speeding. Letters will be sent to all those who were speeding. We’re also going to set up a community speed watch team with residents. #20isPlenty

As I was — very obviously — taking a photo of ~10 #20IsPlenty signs on one block of Irving, a white Tesla with no front plate flew by doing 30+ mph. Didn’t even glance at me, standing next to my cargo bike in the street.
