Years ago I went into a store to buy something to drink and they told me they don't accept AMEX. I told them I'd go across the street, where I know they accept AMEX. Lo and behold, the store remembered that they do in fact accept AMEX.

Man IDK lots of places won't take Amex or Discover, why should Visa/MC be able to foist higher fee rewards cards onto Home Depot or McDonald's or Kroger or what have you?

But that's different than "we take Visa but not *that* Visa". People with Amex also generally understand it may not be universally accepted while Visa and MasterCard (and their entire marketing identity) are generally accepted any place that takes cards.

Discover has historically been super generous with CLIs.
AmEx can be with the right profile too.
My credit building got a huge boost for a few years because AmEx and Discover were competing to be my largest credit line. Half the time auto CLI after they saw the other one hit my credit report.

Who wants to use a credit card / go to a store when you can't tell if the form of payment you brought is accepted until you try it?
The best explanation here is: they know much of the American economy is more collusive than competitive, so consumers generally won't have a choice anyway.

The general rule of thumb was that most merchants would ask to see ID for unsigned cards. Discover, Visa, and MC all required it for an unsigned card. For signed cards, Visa and MC still allowed asking but said you couldnt deny based on lack of ID. Amex left it to merchant discretion.

For awhile stocks were doing "The working-class consumer is struggling but everyone else is fine" and it increasingly feels more like "Unless you're a Comfort Plus/Amex Platinum-American you're struggling."

I'd like to think this would be a sign of Discover and AmEx becoming the 'Less Restrictive Assholes' counterpart. But I also know that, eventually, they'll get hit with the same legal problems that CAUSED Visa and MC to become so restrictive.

Political corruption, mostly. I mean, Visa/MC/AmEx/etc have been able to campaign-donation their way into multiple presidential cabinets and high-level positions in the treasury and regulators.
