#AncestryHour #GenHour Shout-out to my dear husband (the DH) for rescuing the files from my failing hard drive, so I could copy them onto the new hard drive (early Christmas present).

The advantages of having a multi-OS household! Hooray for Linux (and curse you Microsoft).

#AncestryHour Update on wills.

Many of the new arrivals were admons, but for two of my people, I can download the Grant but no Will despite the fact that the calendar says "Probate" not "Administration". For two but not all of the Administrations, I can download the generic Admin letter.

I ordered 20 just before the price-hike.
One came immediately, because it turned out I’ve already ordered it. 🤦🏼‍♀️
Two others have arrived but were very short and dull.
Hoping some of the others are more interesting! #Ancestryhour

#AncestryHour I'm off to download wills and grants!

Happy holidays, all!

#AncestryHour For textbooks, ideally, we need displays that are the same size as the textbook. That means 2nd screens in portrait mode, which I bet most of us don't have. I should have learned my lesson with the epub of Professional Genealogy, but oh well.

#AncestryHour I am not thrilled with the Vitalshelf Bookshelf app and basically agree with Yvette that it's not worth buying ebooks from Genealogical Publishing Co. But I was too cheap to buy the pbook, and too curious to see how the ebook would look on my new 10" tablet.

bsky.app/profile/yhoi...
With a previous version of Evidence Explained, they stopped supporting the viewer they had then (Adobe Digital Editions), so the ebook is now useless. I would not order ebooks from them.

#AncestryHour Also this week, I gave in to temptation and bought this as an ebook. TL;dr Why doesn't the publisher do bundles of pbook plus ebook or offer a downloadable PDF with the links in the book for pbook buyers?
#genealogy
If you're considering getting this as an ebook from Genealogical Publishing Company, a caution:

- it is locked to their proprietary app
- you may want to read on your computer because even on a "10 tablet, the font is small
- no flowing text, the images are the book pages
#GenHour Well, I've done it. Early Christmas present for myself, since I now have a 10" tablet to read on.

Wills being received on a daily basis as I hadn’t realised the price had down during Covid but still a long way to go

Best was a gold medal from
king of Sweden bequeathed by a direct ancestor of my husband

Other wills confirmed research or gave extra info. Many more to come

#AncestryHour Also, last Friday, due to missing out an alarm, I nearly missed the last #GenChat. With that, plus the somber news of the weekend, thoughts of buidling and sustaining community have been on my mind.

#AncestryHour This still does not solve the fundamental problem that my computer's own drive is Too Small, but it will help immensely. Even if it isn't the Network Attached Storage that I long for.
December 16, 2025 at 7:34 PM
#AncestryHour Not much #genealogy research this week. My husband has solved the problem of how to wrap presents by giving me my presents early, since they both arrived in the same orders as things he had bought for himself.

So I have a new 8TB drive to make use of while I sort my computer. 🎉

#AncestryHour By "non-expired" I mean there are three old items which have not moved to the expired tab, even though i would have expected them to move. And one of the 10 I have received was a duplicate order because I couldn't find the copy I had purchased previously.
December 16, 2025 at 7:28 PM
#AncestryHour Oh, wait, there are many more documents available than just for three people. Let's see, easier to count documents pending. / does math

On the system, 39 Orders, of which 3 are non-expired, 5 expired. Of the 31 new orders, I've now received 10.
December 16, 2025 at 7:26 PM
#AncestryHour I stupidly opened my email last night on my phone after I was in bed, and discovered I had three more documents to download. I haven't looked at them yet (cat insisted it was Playtime) but I'll fetch them after the hour was over.
December 16, 2025 at 7:19 PM
Well #AncestryHour , how are you getting on with your wills? I've had seven arrive, one No Find (my fault), awaiting five more. So far, the most interesting thing is my 2x great-grandmother gave one of her grand-daughters a sewing machine while the other got a gold bracelet and necklet...

I *just* noticed that ProTools gives me an option I have been wanting for *ages*, namely, to view the list of All People in Your Tree and then filter by those who have hints. So I can see the list of people without being shown all the individual hints.
