I hear PaintTool Sai is super cheap for illustrations but AnimationPaper has a free demo plus a one-time license purchase for $80, I think.

RoughAnimator is cheap on the iPad and Android devices at around $10. Both are solid purchases and emphasize rough animation before taking them to cleanup.

Animation-wise, TVPaint has been my go-to. Rough Animator is amazing on the iPad and I hear it even has Android-tablet compatibility. Waaay cheaper than TVPaint as well.

AnimationPaper is great and affordable as well.

All options I suggested have perpetual licenses, I believe.

Ive gotten WAY better at animation by simply switching from Adobe Flash/Animate to tools like AnimationPaper, Rough Animator and TVPaint.

Other programs like Davinci Resolve for editing and Reaper for audio do a pretty good job at compositing.

Leave Adobe. They do not care about you.

Thats okay! I made a correction later in the thread that RoughAninator is also on Android devices.

AnimationPaper has a free demo and Krita, OpenToonz are free as well.

Lots of places to get started in 2D Animation.

Thanks for such a detailed answer! I’d love to start 2d animation when I feel somewhat stable, but idk what software should I use. I thought something simple like Tahoma. Should I give AnimationPaper a go? Also why gimp/alpaca?
