Apocryphal Winston Churchill quote: "Yes, I am drunk, but tomorrow I will be sober, and you will still be ugly."

What he actually said: "I...I'm not...you're...I'm drunk, but you're...I'm going to...tomorrow I'll be drunk--ah fuck, I spilled on myself again."

All eminently foreseeable, but this will still go down as an apocryphal story about betrayal and sabotage for so many influential people.
A survey, conducted on behalf of the Democratic group EMILYs List and obtained by POLITICO, finds that most voters wouldn’t support Platner over Republican Sen. Susan Collins after learning of his past social media posts

EMILYs List poll: Platner will lose Maine Senate race
The Maine Senate race is all but a must-win for Democrats looking to take back the Senate.

"Happy 30th, Nan"

(Yeah, probably apocryphal, but I want to believe it's true.)

Yet the Presidency before that it was Manchin and Sinema. If there is only a narrow majority/minority and the GOP need votes you find the most RW leaning and they are offered not a holiday at Disneyland, $10m is a starting point unregistered into their PAC. The Karen Dunn story is apocryphal.

I remember hearing a maybe apocryphal story years ago about Top Gear (the original version) giving a really poor review of some American brand car. The CEO of that brand demanded all advertising be taken away as punishment, and their execs had to explain that the BBC took no advertising money.

Oh damn, it took me too long to find this. Oh well, putting it here. This is a cover of a Japanese magazine in 1985. (It's apocryphal that this is a queer mag? Can anyone confirm?)

The charges of “Blasphemy!” are likely to come fast and furious for Lotfy Nathan’s supernatural horror film revolving around the life of the teenage Jesus. Based on the apocryphal …

Heard an apocryphal story that while Dave was in the hospital he pleaded with a hospital worker for coffee while he was on a strict IV only. The worker took pity and offered it but since he wasn't allowed to drink, they schemed to put it in his IV. He jumped and gasped hard. He said it needed sugar

we didn't retreat, we conducted a successful strategic advance in the retrograde direction

- Gen. MacArthur, when UN forces retreated in disarray after Chinese entry into the Korean War (apocryphal)

This may be apocryphal, but I think it was King Ashoka who set out to find the most unlikable man in his kingdom, and after he found him, made him his assistant. Exemplary trigger practice.

“The enemy has us surrounded. That gives us the opportunity an army almost never has: we can attack in any direction!”

— chesty puller, at the battle of the Chosin Reservoir (probably apocryphal)

This may be apocryphal, but I have heard that the RJD Correctional Facility in So Cal fenced its level 1 areas to keep people out. The coyotes would bring immigrants across the border and tell them to head towards the prison lights. The chow lines in the morning had more than just the inmates.

I have heard a lot of (maybe apocryphal) stories about this from the ‘90s, but my impression was this model was wiped out (at least in humanities) by 2008, if not before.

It's like the apocryphal anecdote about the famous bank robber Willie Sutton when he was asked why he robbed banks. "Because that's where the money is!"

The Dread Pirate solution is how you solve this problem. Indiana Jones or Bond, just have the character be an apocryphal plot device every time.

In the film, Louise tells Weber the word “kangaroo” was created from a misunderstanding, but later says it isn’t true. The story is actually an apocryphal tale about Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia in the 18th century, debunked in the 1970s.

If she blows she will probably achieve what I'm told an IRA person failed to do - take out dreary old Canvey Island. (Story goes that they put a bomb under diesel storage rather than any of the much more explodey tanks - may well be apocryphal.)

There are whispers of a few physical copies floating around at a convention some time ago, but could be apocryphal...

Great piece, Greg.

Has it been noted that this is the second Gatsby-themed party Trump has thrown at Mar-a-Lago? He also had one in 1995 when he opened it as a club, after having lived there 10 years.

And, there's an apocryphal story connecting murdered pedophile Stanford White and Mar-a-Lago. 1/2

I read somewhere that an absurd amount of Dem fundraising in 24 just went absolutely nowhere. To consultants or application developers, rather than actual infrastructure or messaging. Could be apocryphal but my own experience with PACs suggests they are just money pots rather than helpful.

I've seen the quote attributed to Twain, but that is possibly (probably?) apocryphal. At any rate:

"A [person] who doesn't read has no material advantage over one who can't read."
Oh fuck off
