there are people at all levels of govt who've made media archival & specific game-focused initiatives their pet issues; at a federal level, the big name is Ken "worst person you know" Akamatsu, who's been canvassing a lot on game archival via the Diet, researching the intl state of archival etc

One of the reasons I have such an affinity for librarians is we both have deeply misunderstood jobs. People think it's all leather-bound books and rolling shelf ladders, not data science and archival work.
Like, c'mon. We have really strong opinions about ergonomic keyboards.

I love youtube's deep archival trove of just, stuff. This would make me mad if I wasn't just so goddamn tired.
Youtube has announced that all low-res videos (i.e. older ones) are to be automatically AI upscaled to HD.
Creators can opt-out on a per video basis (but the channel may be long abandoned).

When researching props or behind the scenes, old videos are useful, but not if upscaling produces artefacts.

[desperate to justify spending on AI] We're going to ruin YouTube as an archival source :)

Something I love about archival films is that when someone had a couple feet of film left on a roll they'd often use it to film their cat. So many films finish with a few seconds of cats

So, here's some cats from the 1950s and 60s. They were loved

Scanned from 8mm films

Genuine pleasure to be an absolute unit once more! Curious to hear listeners’ opinions on the speculatory nature of this research, and how that might clash with archival neutrality.
Absolute Units is back!

We continue our conversation with @timjerrome.bsky.social (University of Brighton; formerly, The MERL) about his research into queer rural life.

Discover what Tim has found in our archives to date & the research challenges he's faced.

I'm writing a quick guide to digital preservation of Actual Play (targetted at AP producers) -- I have the basics covered from an archival perspective, but do you y'all have any questions or concerns you'd like me to address?

Hah! My article with Chris Ebert (CUNY) got accepted at the AHR. Research started in January 2020. I presented the first draft in 2023, we did a lot more archival research and submitted it in May 2024, got a R&R in January, and resubmitted in July. Thanks to everyone who helped along the way!

“The rich archival collections of Ajami literature refute the pervasive myth of Africa’s supposed illiteracy that is perpetuated by the overemphasis on African oral traditions in academia and the privileging of external sources over local chronicles.”

TheʿAjamī script of Africa and the Sorabé manuscripts of Madagascar.
The most widely used writing system in pre-colonial Africa was the ʿAjamī script.
