Also sorry Salisbury don't like your elevation. Clearly proportioned to be articulated as a triforium (a narrow wall passage) but instead seems 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑜𝑛𝑒 on the committee insisted it be a gallery open to the roofspace.

I think it looks dead silly. Minimal Bourges refs aside: the English being English
View from S aisle of Salisbury Cathedral nave looking NW. The main arcade piers are coursed Tisbury limestone cores with Purbeck shafts on the four angles. Above the hoodmoud, the spandrels of the arcade are entirely plain ashlar. The second storey, strictly a false gallery since it looks like a gallery but opens into a lean-to roofspace, is a single segmental pointed arch with a encircled quatrefoil in the main spandrel and quatrefoils over the subarcuations with trefoil openings, supported on Purbeck shafts. The high vault is articulated to spring from shafts in the spandrels with capitals at clerestory sill level. The clerestory itself (with passage), is a tripartite lancet configuration, under the high vault. The arcades also sit on a prominent stylobate above floor level, which is a very weird choice. James Wyatt in the late 18thc used it as a plinth to place all the displaced monuments from his destructive reordering of the building. no Take only Throw dog comic but it is Triforium/Gallery instead. doesn't really make sense as they don't contradict each other in the same way but the dog has the Salisbury false gallery opening in their mouth.

As though lifted from the pages of a fairytale, Donjon de Septmonts features the iconic aspects of a storybook castle—pale ashlar walls and high towers capped with canonical roofs.

The 12th-century keep was the seat of the Bishop of Soissons.

The intricate 300-year-old iron gates at Chirk Castle near Wrexham in north Wales. I photographed the gates when we were staying at the rather less grand camping site next door.
The early 18th Century gates at the 700-year-old fort, Chirk Castle in north Wales, stand on the drive on the skyline, set back from the right-angled bend outside. The castle, near Wrexham, Denbighshire, is now run by the National Trust. The gates are described by the British Listed Buildings on its site: “Intricate cast and wrought ironwork, painted black with gold highlights. Composition of massive openwork piers with sedent wolf finials in lead, twin carriage gates with side panels and rich heraldic overthrow containing the Myddelton arms. Flanking pedestrian gates; screen railings on dwarf ashlar walls with roll-moulded copings and outer stone piers with acorn finials. Exceptional ironwork detailing includes Corinthian capitals to open piers incorporating vine tendrils and coronets with balustraded bases. Scrolled supports to heraldic overthrow embellished with bird, flower and foliage ornaments; urn finials and sunburst supporter to top rail. Intricate scrolled foliage, masks etc to carriage gates; spear finials and simpler scrollwork crestings to side gates and railings. For much of their life, the gates have been painted white highlighted with gold.” The property was sold to the Myddelton family in 1595 and the descendants continue to live in part of the castle today. It is pictured on a beautiful summer day with clear blue sky overhead. Trees and dry grasslands can be seen through the gates.

Central early C18 range with early C19 canted bays and rear wings to sides and further kitchen wing to rear left.’" It was used to approximate an American Southern plantation in a 1980 episode of the British show "The Sandbaggers."

Early C13; nave remodelled in late C13. early C15 chancel, west tower and north aisle. Roughcast, limestone ashlar dressings; lead roof, stone slate roof to chancel and adjoining north chapel. Aisled nave with south porch, chancel and west tower. Early C15 three-light east window. South wall of chancel has, from right to left, early C15 three-light square-headed window, offset buttress, C17 segmental-arched chamfered doorway, late C18 wall tablet and similar early C15 two-light square headed window. North chapel, continued from aisle, has 2 offset buttresses and C17 three-light cavetto-moulded mullioned window. North wall of nave has C17 one- and two-light stone mullioned windows to C15 clerestorey; buttressed aisle has C17 segmental-arched chamfered doorway flanked by early C15 two-light square and trefoil-headed window and early C16 square- and round-headed window; C15 one-light trefoil-headed window in west wall. South wall of nave has two similar early C15 clerestory windows, crenellated parapet to south aisle and porch; porch has late C13 pointed double-chamfered doorway with late C18 double-leaf doors; chamfered pointed arch to south doorway with ancient plank door. Porch flanked by late C13 two-light window and early C15 two-light square-headed window to left. C15 west tower has offset corner buttresses, early C15 three-light west window and two-light square headed windows to top third level; crenellated parapet with gargoyles to spouts.”

Go look at the stones again. See how they’re neatly cut, right angles, smooth faces, laid out in even rows? We call that coursed ashlar, and it would be a waste of money to build an exterior defensive castle with that. Expensive af. Note also the fine corbels (bracket supporting overhang).

Second, and this is my actual bet: restoration/reconstruction. Maybe a bit earlier. A maintained ruin, basically. Look at this one. An actual Middle English castle keep! Isn’t it lovely? “But, Briggs, look at that ashlar! Didn’t you just say castles didn’t use it?”

Conisbrough Castle’s keep is an iconic landmark, visible for miles and built around 1180 by Hamelin Plantagenet. It’s the oldest part of the castle and a rare example of ashlar-faced limestone. Its circular design, supported by six towering buttresses, is unique in England. with thick walls

Hah well I think I can safely call that a myth. In fact, the inside of these old pillars is actually just course rubble stone stuck together, cased in the smooth ashlar stone. Growing two trees big enough would not only take WAY too long but be terrible foundations.
