the opposite is true. When we lose the connection to the “work of our hands,” we lose our agency. We become dependent on systems we don’t understand and can’t fix.

In Attawapiskat, despite the systemic failures, there is a profound agency in our daily survival. There is a music to it – a rhythm

This piece by Adrian Sutherland resonated with me in ways I didn’t expect. He makes a strong case for knowing the land, and making peace with it, no matter how difficult. The young people of Attawapiskat are lucky to have him as a guiding light.
Why I choose to raise my family in Attawapiskat
Why, when I have seen the world and have the means to leave, do I raise my son in the very place the rest of the country pities?

From Attawapiskat to stages across the country, every one of Adrian’s performances begins with a flight out of his Far North community. Since 2023, Air Creebec has helped him stay connected and share his music far & wide. Thank you #AirCreebec for your support! ✈️💙 AIR CREEBEC: www.aircreebec.ca

The People of the Kattawapiskak River (2012). Documents the emergency housing crises in Attawapiskat, a Cree First Nation in northern Ontario. This made me wish Obomsawin was more often discussed in the context of essay/experimental docs like those made by Chris Marker and Patricio Guzmán.

Attawapiskat & Grassy Narrows is proof that the Canadian gov't is committing genocide, an ongoing genocide of 158 years. It is absolutely disgusting. I am ashamed of this country.
