Most of us, to varying degrees, learn to suppress our wants in order to live around other people. Or, we become so convinced that our wants are inappropriate that we suppress them.

Instead of, “I can’t unmask because no one will accept me,” what if it’s, “I must unmask because people already aren’t accepting this masked me?” What if it’s, “I need to find out who will accept the real me.”

A reflection on autistic masking, trauma, and transformation — where survival becomes sovereignty.
The Mask of Hades explores the archetypal power hidden behind invisibility, and the paradox of a truth that must wear a mask to endure.

You don’t actually learn to get over it. You don’t actually learn to be normal. You just pretend enough.

When the only message that we get is “just deal with it, get over it. Don’t bring it up. I’m tired of hearing about it. You’re always whining.” We don’t learn positive skills. We just learn how to please the people around us.

Masking are types of behaviors that hide our natural Autistic style of talking and acting so that we don’t get spotted as Autistic, or weird, or different, or a target for bullying, around other people. Or not as much. 1/2

Unless you’re sharing your identity discovery process with the people as you’re going through it, they don’t have that processing time to themselves, quietly in their own head, to come to terms with that. 1/2

I never realized how much my face hurts after a day of trying to look like an allistic person. Masking is, in a very real sense, wearing a mask to fit into social situations. It is physically taxing. People think I am angry or sad when I have my normal neutral expression. #autisticmasking #autism

Masking takes an extraordinary amount of energy, it causes autistic burnout, high levels of stress, people avoidance, demand avoidance, it makes me more irritable and unpleasant to be around, and has all sorts of major physical and mental health effects.

I think the essence of masking is that you're taking on harm to yourself in order to avoid doing harm to others.

If you’ve been masking extensively throughout the time that someone’s known you, they might not see what you see when you’re discovering your autism, because you’re seeing what’s going on inside you and they only see the outside version.

Heavily masking autism isn’t a success.

It’s not an “autism cure” (there’s no such thing), and it’s not a compliment when people say “oh, I couldn’t tell that you’re autistic.” It’s a sign that I am fighting my own nature.

Masking prevents us from really knowing ourselves, from being known. And therefore from ever feeling like we’re actually accepted for who we really are, because we’re not showing people who we really are.

One of the hardest parts about figuring out you're Autistic is realizing how long you've been fighting yourself, abandoning your needs, silencing your truth, shrinking your voice...for other people's comfort.

For new people, with whom you don’t yet have a history, honesty is a risk. You can’t really know how much honesty they want, as you don’t yet have enough evidence to tell. 1/2

Autistic masking takes a toll on those of us who don’t always have the luxury to ‘unmask’ it’s time for us to be able to stop making ourselves uncomfortable for the comfort of others, it’s long overdue 🫶🏽♾️ #unmasking #actuallyautistic #autismacceptance #autismawareness
