hey #BlackLamb24 readers, any recommendations for short-ish articles about the history of Yugoslavia? My background knowledge is embarrassingly poor, so though I'm fascinated by the book I know there's a lot I'm missing. TY in advance!

#BlackLamb24 RW more emotionally sensitive than usual today: "her fingers, as if without her own knowledge, turned over the photograph of her mother, laying it with its face down, as if to protect the dead woman from the ancient enemy whose personality was being evoked by these memories."

#BlackLamb24 The blog by James Thomas Snyder which someone mentioned recently is fascinating on the Gerda/Constantine/RW relationship. (With unfortunate information about Constantine in the Croatia section, linked from this page).

Zagreb “It has the warm and comfortable appearance of a town that has been well aired.” #BlackLamb24 I love sinking into Rebecca West’s language every day!

“At this hour all cats are grey & all carpets are beautiful; the colours, fused by the evening, acquire richness.” (p232) RW’s frequent evocation of colour made me think about her earlier mention of Goethe’s theory of colour (p155) & I just went down a rabbit hole. #BlackLamb24

1. Rastaquouére is a foreigner with flashy appearance, displaying suspicious wealth.

2. Zhitcha church- in crimson. (!!!)

3. Milan (or Michael?) abdicates in favor of 13 yr old son Alexander. "Serbia has never sunk lower since its foundation as a state."

Finally caught up with #BlackLamb24 . More fantastic descriptions: "immense and static pictures showing what historical events would have looked like if all the personalges had been stuffed first".

Her opinions about Slav/Western/Irish culture towards the end -- intriguing, let's say!

While I was at it, I also finished #BlackLamb24. The ending as of 1941 is very powerful.

I'd probably never have read the book without this project, and it's been a great experience!
