OTD in 1623, the Fatal Vespers tragedy occurred: a building hosting a secret Catholic service in Blackfriars collapsed, killing around 100. The aftermath saw vicious anti-Catholic violence, but, as I explored, it also reveals much about tolerance & Catholicism in London. doi.org/10.1017/bch....

Yesterday I visited London to see one of my heroes, poet laureat Simon Armitage read and talk about his latest collection of poems New Cemetry. His poetry has got me through some dark times over the last 35 years. It was brilliant to be in the same room as him. The sunset was spectacular as well.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN: 25th October 1940. With improved weather came a marked increase in Luftwaffe activity. At 8:45am, a large raid of Bf 109s crossed the coast. Around 70 reached London between 9:30 and 10am and bombs were dropped in the South and East of the capital.

Two people were killed and 48 injured when a bomb hit a railway bridge over Blackfriars Road in London at 9:52am, destroying several trams. This image shows damage to a railway bridge over a road, below which a double-decker tram has had its top deck destroyed. Another tram, largely destroyed, is visible behind, while one in the foreground is intact except for broken windows.

People are down at the shoreline, looking at what's washed ashore. A rather spindly looking bridge there, but there are lots of people on it. /10

Two people are looking amongst the stones and sand (?) by the Thames, mudlarking it's called (you need a license). Several bridges cross the river, the closest, the Millennium Bridge is high and airy looking, with people walking. Behind are the arches of Blackfriars rail bridge, almost concealing the one behind. On the left, across the river are a group of modern, slightly green, glass tower blocks. The sky is cloudy with some almost clear bright spots.

They call it The Vase: One Blackfriars, the sculpted glass tower rising by the Thames. Finished in 2019, it divides opinion — beauty or excess? Either way, it’s pure modern London: bold, reflective, and impossible to ignore.

When I think of the yobbos wandering drunkenly and aggressively round Holborn and Blackfriars before 9am on the day of Tommy Robinson's invasion I am surprised that so few were apprehended on that day.
