🤯 Every Explainable AI (XAI) system has a silent killer

⚡️ It’s called the sociotechnical gap

🧐 How do you detect & diagnose it?

🔥 Our #CSCW2023 paper “Charting the Sociotechnical Gap in XAI” gives you a framework to do it

Today my colleague Upol Ehsan presented his work on "Charting the Sociotechnical Gap in XAI" at #CSCW2023.

A lot of XAI projects fail to help users. Here is why:

The Sociotechnical gap is the divide between (a) what the technology allows and (b) what people want.

jazzed to attend #CSCW2023 this year and hang out at the workshop on community-collaborative approaches in HCI!

if you're into participatory design or journalism, let's chat about how to realistically and sustainably build cool stuff with the people who will use it!

I'll be at #CSCW2023 and can't wait to meet old and new friends! Let's talk if you're interested in cross-platform visual misinformation, the (mis)uses of AI-generated photos and video, or what faculty life is like at a liberal arts college. Swarthmore CS is also hiring multiple visiting faculty.
