IGH-LEVEL public opposi-ton ta brial promised acuts at Cardift University i growing. Neil Kinnock is the latest to add his voice following Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, world-leading mathema-ticians, artists and musicians including Sir Simon Rattle as well as the presidents of the European and London Mathematical Socie-ties. Hundreds of musicians from across the UK also grabbed head lines when they took to Cardiff streets last month, performing in protest as the Cardiff University Salvation Orchestra. Lord Kinnock's strongly worded and high-profile letter to Cardiff University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Larner is just the latest piece of bad publicity the crisis-hit university hardly needs. The former Labour leader, also a former student of the institution which became Cardiff University, knows how it runs and the pressures it is under. He is a past president of the university, after all. His standing, knowledge and association with Wales' only elite Russell Group instituion can hardly be discounted or ignored. Opposing the wholesale cuts and job losses, he hones in on the school of modern languages, as that was his subject. Losing this depart-ment, as proposed, would "dimin-ish" the university, he warns. News of the cuts has spread far beyond Wales or even the UK. Thanks to the global reach of higher education and the pressure to woo higher-paying international students, the news has reached wider potential markets. Cardiff is not alone in facing enormous financial pressure. The forecast £3lm deficit may be the largest of any university in Wales, but others here and across the UK are shedding jobs and courses. And there is a risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Bad news travels fast and reputation lost is not easily regained. University maths cuts 'don't add up':
"Threatening staff in its successful school of mathematics, which is returning a significant budget surplus and is one of its crown jewels in research, is bizarre. This will not improve Cardiff's finances nor its global reputation."

Further setbacks for Cardiff Uni bosses as University Senate votes against the cruel & unnecessary cuts citing the "lack of a clear and compelling Business Case" it says it's "not convinced on the evidence shown of the necessity for and validity" of the plans.

Owing to the lack of a clear and compelling Business Case, the Senate is not convinced on the evidence shown of the necessity for and validity of the Academic Futures project as a path to a sustainable future for our University. The Senate requires this motion is reported to Council under Ordinance 5, 8.7(4).
