We have recently finished reading Dogman and Catkid, plus Donut Squad World with my 4 year old daughter. She loved Dogman, and found the Donuts very funny. Me and husband enjoyed putting on voices for every character.

And for god's sake, if you're recommending to today's kids, look for things that will appeal to them, not that appealed to you.
Did I read The Mouse and the Motorcycle to Squidling? Part of it. But it didn't hit, and now they're happily reading Dogman and Catkid, and that is GREAT.

My six year old got the whole dogman box set for christmas and, conservatively, has read all 13 or whatever books five times a piece, and then she learned about the catkid spin off. She genuinely consumes them faster than she eats actual food.

We found a pair of Catkid books in a little free library in our neighborhood, and after trying one the Squidling is obsessed. I grabbed the other one last night while my husband put him to bed, and he was delighted to have another. 😊

One of my other kids started solely on graphic novels (which is why we own several catkid books). They eventually moved on as well but catkid, dogman, Katie the catsitter… were the foundation. (Kiddo still prefers graphic novels but does read other stuff too)

Thank you for sharing this! Made me smile. Dogman, Catkid, and Cap Underpants are definitely the books driving my 8 year old son's love of reading. We buy them all because they're so popular we can hardly ever find the right one at the library.
