I love Monday morning quarterbacking about battles that happened hundreds or thousands of years ago. The cathars should've had guns, morons.

The Cathars and Gnostics believed the bible was written by Satan to trick humans into worshipping him and cites many passages about god being jealous and murderous as evidence.

There is not enough exposition to clarify one way or the other if this is supposed to be a riff on the crusades against the Cathars, but it doesn't seem so. Perhaps they're surrounded by the rare "turbo orcs", or zombies?

My background isn’t even primarily 20th-century history. This stuff isn’t exactly obscure, though, and it’s practically yesterday. It’s not like debating the hypothetical connection between Cathars and Late Antique Manichaeans and Zurvanists or deciphering the Voynich MS.

It’s the SS and Ustaše.

A good medievalist take on this impulse within the middle ages itself, not those who study it, is "a persecuting society"

Ignore the part where he says cathars weren't real, that's not correct

It’s not a new academic position (only in the 19thC did they make it up, and in the middle of the 20th it was already largely discounted as a myth) so my opinion is that they’re right (and that some of the people who use the Cathars to sell their crap/ attract tourists should stop… yesterday)

Missed one.
After the Crusades, 19 consecutive Pope's waged genocide against the Cathars for over 100 years.
They wiped them from the face of the earth, simply because they refused to be part of the Catholic Church.

Why were the Acadians expelled? The Huguenots? The Moors? The Carthaginians? Nestorian Christians? The Cathars?

I dunno, man. When you ask that question, it's like you have never heard of state religions, scapegoating, ethno-nationalism, economic seizure.

Charlemagne kills 4,500 Saxons in a day (782)
Cathars wiped out in 20 yrs (1209–1229)
Lithuania pagan → Christian in 1 gen (1387)
Old gods didn’t die—they were executed

Religious safety is not a guarantee.
It turns fast.

As expected, a great podcast on the Cathars (for the francophones).
C'est le 400e épisode du podcast ! 🥳
Plus d'un par semaine depuis avril 2018. Et plein d'énergie pour continuer avec aujourd'hui Arnaud Fossier pour sa petite synthèse incisive sur les Cathares @lafabrique.bsky.social
Bonne écoute et bonne semaine !

Antifa Cathars

🤝

Whether or not they actually exist
is irrelevant, they must be destroyed
to protect our great civilization.

That's committing early! He really should have used his control years to build to that first free agency contract. You hate to see elite prospects committing this soon to something this team friendly. It's like when Evan Longoria signed with the Cathars when he was barely out of confirmation.

There should be crusade football chants.

"Hey, hey, Innocent III,
How many Cathars have you interred?"

Higher and higher into the mountains, once the final retreat of the Cathars, dropping off a few hikers at each little station. #Schengen200

Today was one of those fun moments were I talk about late antique Manichaeans in one class and medieval Cathars in another and the few students who are in both get their minds blown.

The historical existence of Cathars as a distinct religious identity is not a certain fact I don’t think

I wonder if the idea that yellow is an evil colour originally came from the Inquisition and its determination that the Cathars were heretics. The Cathars wore yellow and yellow was considered heretical.
