Despite its unpleasant associations, this chair is ornately decorated with foliage, scrolls and the heads of mythological sea monsters called makara. It is made from wood with 12 steel blades in the arm, back and foot rests and seat. For many years this chair was falsely believed to be a torture instrument, however it was more likely used by Chinese spirit mediums or tang-ki (pinyin tongji) whilst channeling the spirit of a god. Sitting on the blades demonstrated the superhuman power of the god over the human flesh, which remained unharmed.

Provenance: from a French private collection
Seated side-saddle on a horse with head turned and holding a vase, possibly for use as a candleholder. She wears a white robe with ample sleeves flowered in pink and gold. The horse, which is flat-backed and pierced for suspension, is dappled in purple with a brown tail.
An almost identical figure was in the Mottahedeh Collection, published by David Howard and John Ayers in China For the West, 1977, Tome II, p. 616, no. 646.
In ancient China, especially during the Tang Dynasty, women riding horses had significant cultural and social meanings, reflecting a shift in societal norms and the growing involvement of women in various aspects of life. This practice was not limited to elite women but also became a common social custom, with depictions of female riders in tomb art, figurines, and literature indicating their increasing presence in public and social spheres.
By the Tang Dynasty, horse riding had become a fashion and a part of daily life for aristocrat women, as evidenced by documentary records and tomb figurines.
Even in later periods, such as the Qing Dynasty, horses and archery were considered crucial aspects of statehood, as seen in the Mulan Camp and the legacy of Hua Mulan, a female hero known for her bravery on horseback.

An exquisite antique circa 1890 Chinese export handmade enamel over silvered copper and carved bovine bone Elderly Man design hinged box. A unique piece no doubt! I've never seen another! Hand incised design of leaves and flowers under the enamel centering a large carved bovine bone figure of an elderly Chinese man wearing traditional robes and hat. Extremely detailed and dimensional carving! I've examined the carving closely, and it is definitely bovine bone not ivory as you can clearly see in my closeups. (I'm a certified gemologist, and I guarantee this item to be as described.) The fine hand-incised details have then been given touches of paint to accentuate them and give the carving further unique character. The box measures 6" long by 3.75" wide by 1.75" high at the edges. The carving measures 4.25" long by 1.5" wide by about 1/2" thick at center. Unmarked. There are a few very small dings to the enamel on the outsides of the box as shown. Also, the inside of the box has considerable wear to the silver-plating. This could be easily covered by lining the inside with an appropriate cloth or other material. I've left it as found, and I'm leaving any restoration to the new owner. The carved figure is without damage of any kind. Overall very good antique condition.

Altar frontal of pale brick-colored k'ossu. In the center of the lower section a large, seated four-clawed dragon in dull gold with a longevity character in the curve of its tail. Loose, fat clouds and bats in shades of green, blue, yellow and tan. Below, the waves of the Eternal Sea with Taoist symbols. Above, in the valance section set off from main field by a band of dark blue and gold brocade, are three pale brick-colored medallions on an apple green k'ossu ground. In the end medallions two slender dragons of K'ang Hsi type; in central medallion the two dragons are spearated by a longevity symbol. Surrounding the medallions, bats and fat clouds in shades of blue, brown, yellow, and tan. All-around applied border of two-fold dark blue and gold brocade. Lining of steel gray satin damask. Note dragon's face and tail have been restored by applying sections of finer, later k'ossu. A.P. says Faded and poor quality, but still I think K'ang Hsi.

Probably used for storing wine, vinegar, soy sauce and other liquids during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1280-1368) dynasties, mei ping bottles such as this came to be favored in later periods as vases for cut branches of flowering plum as the term, mei ping ("plum bottle" or "plum vase") implies. In fact, the term mei-ping does not appear in pre-Qing (1644-1912) texts. This elegant example of Jizhou stencil decoration displays a cut branch of flowering plum on each side of the bottle. The details of the pistils were brushed in with brown slip on the bisquit reserve and, as was typical in this technique, the resist portions of the design were coated with a thin application of clear glaze for protection.
