Zohran Mamdani caught lying the he understood the different chiralities of zusammen & entgegen, yet when asked to explain them, he seemed to instead explain the first pass mechanism & its production of alternate isomers of compounds, which seems similar to chirality but is not the same
Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

👀 Bonne lecture !

I don't think there "needs" to be a benefit of one over the other. The benefit is that there is one conserved chirality. Its an unstable equilibrium that would converge on one or the other over time, but that doesn't mean there was a "purpose" for the one that won out. Or that's how I think about it

I try not to invent life that hasn't existed on earth, with some leeway for gravity/oxygen levels. I skirt that a bit when where we're pretty sure it can exist: inverse chirality; one species uses coboglobin rather than hemoglobin or hemerytherin; phycoerythrin wins out over chlorophyll elsewhere.
For those who have written sci-fi with alien species, how do scientists categorize them?
Would the kingdoms of animal, plant, fungus, etc apply in your world?
Are there new kingdoms?
How do you handle designing alien species from a scientific point of view?

Chirality is such a bitch. I think this is part of what's been exacerbating my asthma so badly that I need Super Fancy Med (which I am honestly excited for) but I have no idea how to bring this one up to my Lung Dr, ugh. (I have been needing my albuterol way too much lately. 'Twice a day' much.)

the (what i have come to call) "false chirality" is moreover extremely frustrating, like the mental model is symmetric and continuous, but when convenient collapses to a binary? like this person did not make too many obviously right-wing noises so that makes him left-wing?

Congrats to Scripps Research Prof. @donnablack.bsky.social on being elected to @raeng.org.uk for her work in developing Reaction Progress Kinetic Analysis (RPKA) and research in molecular chirality—shaping both drug development and our understanding of life’s chemical origins. ow.ly/uefs50X1exY

#SciFiSeptember Day 21: A ubiquitous technology is the tester, that ubiquitous gadget to ensure food safety. Some people presume it’s just a pH checker, toxins database, and portable mass spectrometer, but it’s critical to check everything from chirality to radiation level when eating alien foods.
#SciFiSeptember day 21: share a snippet with the word "device" or something about a cool gadget in your universe!

Hey,
it happens to everyone except those that die before their parents, which is worse, for everyone.
He'd made emeritus for plasma physics a couple of year earlier but towards the end he was concerned that dimensional chirality made me avoid using the middle door of the house when I went over.

This Tuesday 16 September, I will give my first Gresham Lecture of the year in London. The theme this year is the Geometry of Nature. I will start with one of my favourite subjects: Chirality. If interested, you can join in person or online www.gresham.ac.uk/speakers/pro...

Chirality is like the difference between your right and left hand - same atoms and bonds, but mirrored.
Most biological processes are homochiral. A protein trying to process a molecule with the wrong chirality is like putting a glove on the wrong hand: it might work but badly, or not at all.

Patents don't "prevent" the making of generics.
Pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and chirality play a larger role in preventing the manufacturing of generics than patents do.
In the US, a generic drug only has to be "biosimilar" to its counterpart.
And biosimilarity is the fair use of drug law.

🧬 Therapeutic oligonucleotides need precise P-chirality control for 🔬 stability & ⚡ efficacy. Phosphorothioate (PS) bonds create diastereomers, affecting drug performance. 🛠️ Advanced analytics like ion mobility spectrometry & chromatography ensure consistency. 📏

The good news is that they have an inherent disadvantage in a world of abundant reverse chirality. There’s a reason we don’t see mirror organisms: it takes extra effort to build the chemical tools to allow them to eat the prevalent chirality sugars. Everything eats their lunch.
