#Coharie
Redistricting splits up North Carolina's tribal service areas. It's especially bad for Lumbee and Coharie - each tribe's service area is split into 3 districts. Nationally, most Indigenous people live in cities. But NC flips that pattern, with most living in rural tribal service areas. #ncpol

This weekend, we were proud to be at the 55th Annual Coharie Indian Cultural Pow Wow in Sampson County, NC.

We took our message to working people: no one working full-time should be taxed into poverty. That’s why we’re demanding a working-class tax cut paid for by millionaires like our members.

New paper! 📢 Our team at @unchpdp.bsky.social published research on our participatory grantmaking pilot with our community partners.

We tested "network voting" (developed by U of MN colleagues for SNAP-Ed) to let grantees make funding decisions, instead of funders.

Every being is different, so good for you that you found who you supposed to be. My father is white, hence the last name Krizni, my mother is a native Coharie from North Carolina small tribe that formed along the Coharie River. I live in New Jersey.

At last year’s AISES conference, Apple Maps announced addition of US #Indigenous lands to their database. The presenters only mentioned reservations, but they later told me they’d used the US Census AIANNHA layer, which includes NC tribal lands. Not perfect, but good to see SDTSAs tagged.

Amid the chaos, people still do amazing work. Watch a segment on the Great Coharie River Initiative & Coharie Tribe airing soon on State of Change (PBS North Carolina). Beloved river, powerful story, beautiful production. Pairs well with Ch. 7 of my book, #OnTheSwamp

My great-great grandmother was native american and sadly she was not buried with her husband and children for the same reason. When her daughter died she choose to be put beside her Mom in the Coharie cemetary. I was old enough to attend her funeral in 1982.

He's definitely adorable! Here's a bigger version. I took this myself at the 2016 Coharie Pow Wow. He's probably the most beautiful man I've ever seen in my life.

I'm super excited to see Cashwell (Coharie & Lumbee) at the helm of the NC Dept. of Natural & Cultural Resources. Many important programs fall under her purview - parks, museums, State Archives, State Historic Preservation Office, & new American Indian Heritage Commission! #ncpol #Indigenous
Friday I swore-in Pam Brewington Cashwell as Secretary of the Department of & Cultural Natural Resources. We first met at the US Department of Justice where she distinguished herself at the national level as a brilliant and committed attorney in the Civil Rights Division.
