#TaiwaneseAmericanHeritageWeek (May 12 - May 19), to members of the Taiwanese American community at City Hall. D6 is home to the largest proportion of Asian residents in ATX, & during #AANHPI month, we honor the unique culture & contributions of Taiwanese Americans.

Manoomin (Wild Rice) as Michigan's Native Grain ANISHINAABEK CAUCUS OF THE MICHIGAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY Manoomin is considered sacred and central to the Annishaabe culture Manoomin is a important nutritious & traditional food source for the Anishnaabe people. The Anishinaabek word for wild rice, manoomin, translates as "good berry" Manoomin is central to Anishinaabek community cohesion, commerce, agricultural pracaces, healthful sustenance, and cultural and historic lineage. Because of these deep connections, manoomin is considered sacred. Wherever possible, Ojibwe communities in the Great Lakes have retained their connections to this important plant, and many continue to cultivate and harvest manoomin each year. Once common across Michigan, Manoomin has significantly declined Manoomin grows in shallow, quiet waters of inland lakes & slow-flowing streams. Historically, Manoomin was widespread with the largest beds found in the vast coastal marshes along the Great Lakes & outlets of Michigan's major rivers. Once plentiful in places like northern Michigan, manoomin populations have dwindled due to factors like habitat loss, degraded water quality, & development. Presently there are less than 200 rice beds across the state, with only one large bed remaining, for a total of only 700 acres. Wild rice grew along many of the banks in the Detroit River. Indigenous people gathered it by knocking it into their canoes. A small strand of wild rice currently exists along the shoreline of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. Manoomin is an integral part of the aquatic ecosystem Manoomin shelters young fish from predators until they are big enough to survive. It provides natural habitat and protection for migratory waterfowl, birds, & mammals, and is a primary food source for many animals.
