Love an analysis that starts with the right problem statement. And for cars that's falling demand. Subsidies might help a bit - but ultimately the question is whether Europe is giving up on the idea of international competitiveness.
The car crisis tops today’s EU summit but leaders keep staring at the wrong problem

The issue isn’t the 2035 engine ban - it’s demand falling off a cliff today

With @sandertordoir.bsky.social and @lucasguttenberg.bsky.social, we show why flipping regs won’t help - and what the EU can do instead.

The Green Deal was heavily discussed today. It is clear many fights are ahead of us, but let us first seal the 90% deal on 2040 in two weeks time. For our competitiveness, long-term.clarity is needed now.
The European Council just held an in-depth discussion on how to make sure that Europe’s climate ambitions and the competitiveness of our economy go hand in hand.

We reaffirmed our commitment to the Paris Agreement and stressed that we need to be pragmatic and flexible in our strategy.

"Sporting" doesn't necessarily mean the competitors symmetrically matched, but it does mean there's some semblance of competitiveness.

That uncertainty is part of what keeps folks watching and entertained-- they want to know who wins.

Industrial policy is back — and it's changing fast. What started as "green" strategy is now a global race for clean tech competitiveness and economic security. But do we actually know what works? That's what we're asking at the New Energy Industrial Strategy (NEIS) Center. /1

The climate competitiveness strategy apparently being folded into the budget, rather than being released this month as intended, suggests to me that the government is not confident it'll stand well on its own merits.

The current push for “state capitalism” looks less like a plan and more like improvisation.

Despite touting free market rhetoric, the U.S. government has historically played a major role in American industry. But what’s Trump’s plan for his involvement in American businesses? And does he even have one?
Trump 2.0 seems to embrace state capitalism — without the strategy
The administration’s 10% equity stake in Intel looks like an embrace of state capitalism, but economist Mariana Mazzucato warns the move is unaligned with any strategy.

In Act II we will transform our buildings, industry and transportation - shifting from fossil fuels imported from countries who would do us harm to relying on that cheap, secure, clean, European energy to protect our security, insulate us from geopolitical threats & build our competitiveness.
