this was a huge boon like most of the open web- prior to this I would get FAQs off of CompuServe, limited to the selection of ones with authors who also used CompuServe
VGFA collected FAQs across the walled gardens into one spot on the web, and was an incredible move forward

iirc $15 usage credit amounts to about three hours logged in- we had compuserve growing up, and i got to have two half hours per week on it, since it was metered by the hour
mostly i spent the whole time downloading text files to read later, especially video game FAQs

also: in the back of the manual, it looks like they made a deal to promote dialup internet service CompuServe? it seems like they didn't make the deal with the company, but rather, with sales representative #368

Something else was growing at the same time as my fame as a writer took off.
At first, they called it the World Wide Web but soon they changed it to the Internet.
I experimented with Prodigy and CompuServe, two early Internet companies.

Remember when Trump said they captured the airports in the Revolutionary war (1775-1783)? Now the right is claiming Zohran Mamdani tweeted something bad in 1986. Hint: I was in the first wave of people on the Internet in 1989 (CompuServe dial up) & Twitter was 2006. 🤣

I didn't work at CompuServe, but was a very active user, and I remember we called progressive GIFs "creamy" and interlaced GIFs "crunchy."

Rolled out of bed and #RandomGameSaturday is the most obvious thing on my bookshelf, Sam & Max Hit the Road!
This game helped develop my comedic voice in writing and performing probably more than anything else, and getting it to run with a boot disk on a home PC was an important learning for me.

Aww, I wonder if it was Compuserve? That would be around the right era for Win 3.1.

I was a sysop on a CompuServe BBS called "The Lazy Dragon". My handle was "Duke of Drat". 1982. Feels like another life.

I paid for Compuserve. It was the only way to get help with Infocom games. And then it opened many more Usenet groups.

Alas for my old internet that was so safe and pleasant, just people mooching around on Compuserve and Prodigy and whatnot arguing over what is the best P.G. Wodehouse novel (The Code of the Woosters)

IIRC CompuServe was the same company who invented the world-famous GIF format back in 1987!

And “this product sucks now, let’s find another” is supposed to be the beating heart of capitalism - creative destruction and all that. That’s certainly been the experience of using the Internet for me.

Core, The…If we do this right, Muggsy is gonna get blown up when he logs in via CompuServe or what ever is left since AOL dropped dial up.
It’s going to take him many to several minutes to see all of these notifications.

Hams, BBS, CompuServe, AOL, blah blah dating apps. I’ve placed hundreds, read 100Ks resumes , lots of former military, many widely traveled.
In 38 years of recruiting, I have never seen “Ham Radio” on a woman’s resume.
I used to see “Heath Kit” from the same cohort.

When I first went online (we're talking tiny me on Compuserve), my dad drilled into me - never share your photo, never share your address, never share anything personally identifiable. Once it's online, it's online forever.

Apple had its own online service like America Online and CompuServe in 1994 called eWorld. It was $9/mo, plus an additional $5-9 for each hour, depending on weekday or weekend hours. The service lasted less than 2 years.
