Not universals, but patterns I've noticed in dramas with contemporary settings
Jdrama-Friendship is often priotized over romance in the plot
Cdrama-Often explores filial piety & loyalty
Kdrama-It sometimes feels like they're trying to balance traditional neo-Confucian ideals with modern ambitions.

Taisu Zhang at Neo-Confucian Studies Seminar on 11/7
If you are interested in the following talk and/or the group dinner afterward, please RSVP the rapporteur Ivy Chen ([email protected]) by 5pm on Oct. 30 in order to get the campus access code. Ms. Chen can also send you the pre-circulated paper. Meeting Date: 11/07/2025, 3:30-5:30 pm Speaker: Taisu Zhang, Yale Law School Title of Meeting: Legality and Confucian Decline in Modern China Location: The Heyman Center for the Humanities (74 Morningside Dr, New York, NY 10027) Abstract: Prof. Zhang will present a chapter from a book manuscript-in-progress, tentatively titled Legality in China. This chapter finds that law and legality provide the Party-state with significant amounts of perceived sociopolitical legitimacy even when they serve to strengthen governmental control and dominance. Specifically, the Chinese public is more likely to ideologically accept controversial constraints upon their freedom when those constraints are issued in a legalized fashion. This chapter makes four specific observations to suggest that across the long arc of modern Chinese history, political and intellectual elites seemed to collectively accept normatively thin understandings of law and legality to a far greater extent than what classical Confucianism could tolerate. In fact, much of this acceptance emerged as an explicit rejection of Confucian political morality. Paper: Email Ivy Chen ([email protected]) for a copy. RSVP: If you plan to join the talk, please RSVP to Ivy Chen by Oct 30 at 5pm. *For non-Columbia affiliated members, please make sure to send me your first name, last name, and email address for pre-register with campus security (you will receive a QR code to enter the gate). Please make sure to bring a valid ID and arrive early. Dinner: After the meeting, we will have a group dinner at Happy Hot Hunan (御湘园) restaurant. When you RSVP, please also indicate if you will join us for dinner so that Ms. Chen can make a reservation.

Dithered too long on the Criterion flash sale, so Fast Times went out of stock.

Ended up with an eclectic set:
A Confucian Confusion / Mahjong: Two Films by Edward Yang
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice
Bringing Up Baby

Green Tea is a blind buy for me.

Nah. He said Freeda's not like that.

The chapter mentions that Giesel doesn't like the cold, so maybe it's more that? 🤔

But it's very kinda Confucian of him to *bathe* clothed, innit? 👀😅

Gender roles have deep roots in Japanese society, where Confucian ideals emphasized a patriarchal structure. Takaichi's leadership directly challenges these norms and could reshape societal expectations.

This is how Hollywood thinks, in its Confucian top-down hierarchical power-and-celebrity mad uncreative play-it-safe culture. Producers have deals with studios. Studios make pet projects of their own. They make a flop, they say, "He's famous so we did the right thing by hiring him, don't fire us."

I mean, it, as with everything, can be carried way too far. It doesn't mean that a small admixture of more Confucian ethics wouldn't be a bad idea. Besides, I'm pretty sure that trans people would absolutely clean up in the exam, and I think it'd be funny to watch the people who caused this shitshow

It's a good essay! One thing that's really struck me about all of this is the degree to which it's seen by the elites as completely divorced from the business of actually running the state. Like, imagine trying to explain to a Confucian scholar-official that public conduct and moral formation

**Pagan Trivia: China**

Liu Bang, the founder of China's Han Dynasty, had such contempt for Confucian scholars in his early years that whenever he saw one wearing the school's distinctive hat, he'd snatch the hat off their head and piss in it.
