#Coniopterygidae
Today's #backyardnature is a prey/predator combination from the same plant - a group of oleander aphids (Aphis nerii) and a dusty lacewing (family Coniopterygidae) that feeds on aphids and other plant pests. #entomology

#Dwerggaasvlieg - #Coniopterygidae
Kleine, tere gaasvlieg met bleekgrijze, stoffige vleugels en kort lichaam. Vleugels lijken mat wit door waslaag. Voelsprieten lang en draadvormig. Ogen relatief groot. Determinatie tot soort vaak onmogelijk zonder microscopisch onderzoek

So, a couple of weeks ago I collected a new insect family in my backyard: Coniopterygidae (Dusty-winged Lacewings). That was the first time I'd ever encountered one. Less than two weeks later, I collected a different species from the same family. Wild!

Revised & updated prehistoric Coniopterygidae (dustywing) wings. For this piece I’m stepping out of cosmology/astrophysics & into paleoentomology—a branch of entomology dealing with fossilized insects. Saving the rest for later, I’ll finish by saying my interest in 'time immemorial' led me here.

Dusty lacewings (Neuroptera: Coniopterygidae) are small but important predators of aphids, mites, whiteflies, and other pestiferous insects. They differ from other lacewings partly because they are covered in a white waxy powder. Blissfield Michigan, 14 Jun 2011.

Noticed a lone dustywing (Neuroptera: Coniopterygidae) at the kitchen window while making coffee this morning. That turned into a search at all our windows with an aspirator and I ended up with a decent series of specimens. Always fascinating what can come in with your Xmas tree 🎄 #Entomology
